Ivanovo Centre for Gender Studies was founded in March 1996 as a research subdivision at Ivanovo State University. In 1997 it obtained the status of NGO, functioning with the support of inter-institutional research programme «Women of Russia: Problems of Adaptation in the New Socio-Economic Conditions».
At present ICGS is the member of inter-regional public organization «Women’s Leadership and Partnership». Among its constant partners are International Republican Institute, the programme «Dialogue between Civil Society and the State» with the support of Charity Aid Foundation (CAF) and European Commission, Orebro University (Sweden), and Far-Eastern Research Centre of Local Government.
Mission statement of the organization: Educational and enlightening work in the local community, support of both career and professional progress of women, social moderatoring for the resolution of socio-economic problems of the region by joint efforts of the authorities and civic society.
The main spheres of ICGS’ work are educational, research and expert activities, aimed at promotion of the ideas of equality, tolerance and democracy in the local community and in Russia through partner organizations, education, support of the women’s professional growth, social mediation in the process of interaction between NGOs and State. Among its educational projects, which ICGS had been successfully carrying out, are the following:
1999 – «From Global to Local: Gender Studies in Russia and Abroad» (with the financial support of Women’s Network Programme, Open Society Institute, Russia)
1999 – «Integration of Gender Courses in the System of Secondary Education» (with the financial support of MATRA-KAP Programme, Embassy of the Netherlands)
2001 – International Summer School «Gender Pedagogic and Gender Education in the Post-Soviet Space: Prospects of Development» (with the financial support of the HESP Programme, CEU)
2002 – seminars for school teachers and officials in the frames of the project «Complex Model of Gender Education» with the assistance of Canadian Fund for Support of Russian Women
2003 – International Summer School for school teachers «Complex Model of Gender Education: from College to School» (with the financial support of the MATRA-KAP Programme of the Embassy of the Netherlands)
2004 – seminars «Strategies of Women’s Advancement into the Politics in Sight of New Regional Elections» (with the financial support of International Republican Institute)
2005 – 2006 – seminars and trainings «No Democracy without Equal Representation: Stirring up of Women’s Participation in the Decision-Making Process on the Local Levels» (grant of the Democracy Commission, US Embassy).
2007 – seminars on prevention of gender discrimination in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk (international trainer’s team) – with the support of the American Academy for Educational Development
2007 – interregional summer school “Increasing of women’s role in local self-government” – The Grant of “MATRA” Programme
